Labstatin® (Nystatin oral suspension)

Each ml contains Nystatin BP 100,000 I.U.

Nystatin is a polyene antibiotic which interferes with the permeability of the cell membrane of sensitive fungi by binding to sterols, chiefly ergosterol. Its main action is against Candida spp. It is also effective against Aspergillus spp; Coccidiodes immitis, Cryptococcus neoformans, Histoplasma capsulatum, Blastomyces dermatidis and other yeast and fungi.

Nystatin is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It is not absorbed through the skin or mucous membranes when applied topically.

Indications and dosage

Nystatin is used for the prophylaxis and treatment of candidiasis of the skin and mucous membranes.

In infants and children a dosage of 100 000 units or more may be given 4 times daily. Adults may take 500 000 to 1,000,000 I.u. by mouth 3 or 4 times daily.

Nystatin has been administered with antibiotics in various regimens to suppress the overgrowth of gastrointestinal flora.

Precautions and warnings

Nystatin is contraindicated in patients with a known history of hypersensitivity to nystatin

Adverse effects

Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea have occasionally been reported after the oral administration of nystatin. Irritation may occur rarely after the topical use of nystatin. Discontinue treatment if sensitisation or irritation is reported.


Store in a dry place below 30ºc. Protect from light. Keep out of reach of children. Do not freeze.
