What is LymphangioleioMyomatosis?

LAM, or lymphangioleiomyomatosis, is a rare type of lung disease that affects mostly women of childbearing age (the years between puberty and menopause when it is possible to become pregnant). Symptoms of LAM may include shortness of breath, tiredness, and cough. LAM can be difficult to diagnose, as the symptoms often look like asthma, bronchitis, and other lung diseases.

Alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency

What is alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency?

AAT is a protein made in your liver to help protect the lungs. If your body does not make enough AAT, your lungs are more easily damaged from smoking, pollution, or dust from the environment. This can lead to COPD. AAT deficiency may also cause a liver disease called cirrhosis. This is more common in children who have AAT deficiency.
